For Pharaoh will say of the Israelites, ‘They are wandering the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in.’[ † ]Psalms 71:11

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. But I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So this is what the Israelites did.[ † ]Exodus 4:21Exodus 7:3Exodus 14:17Exodus 9:16Exodus 14:17-18, 23Romans 9:17-22, 23Exodus 7:5Exodus 14:25

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have released Israel from serving us.”[ † ]Psalms 105:25

So Pharaoh prepared his chariot and took his army with him. 7He took 600 of the best chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.[ † ]Exodus 15:4

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified and cried out to the Lord.[ † ]Joshua 24:7Nehemiah 9:9Psalms 34:17Psalms 107:6 11They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?[ † ]Exodus 5:21Exodus 15:24Exodus 16:2Exodus 17:3Numbers 14:2-3Numbers 20:3Psalms 106:7-8 12Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”[ † ]Exodus 5:21Exodus 6:9

But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the Lord’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again.[ † ]Genesis 15:1Genesis 46:3Exodus 20:202 Chronicles 20:15-17Isaiah 41:10-13, 14Psalms 46:10-11Exodus 14:30Exodus 15:2Deuteronomy 28:68 14The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”[ † ]Exodus 14:25Exodus 15:3Deuteronomy 1:30Deuteronomy 3:22Joshua 10:14-42Joshua 23:22 Chronicles 20:29Nehemiah 4:20Isaiah 31:4Isaiah 30:15

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. 16And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.[ † ]Exodus 4:17-20Exodus 7:19Exodus 14:21-26Exodus 17:5-6, 9Numbers 20:8-9, 11Isaiah 10:26 17And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. 19And the angel of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them,[ † ]Exodus 13:21-22Isaiah 63:9 20so that it came between the camps of Egypt and Israel. The cloud was there in the darkness, but it lit up the night. So all night long neither camp went near the other.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove back the sea with a strong east wind that turned it into dry land. So the waters were divided,[ † ]Psalms 66:6Psalms 106:9Psalms 136:13-14Exodus 15:8Joshua 3:16Joshua 4:23Nehemiah 9:11Psalms 74:13Psalms 78:13Psalms 114:3-5Isaiah 63:12-13 22and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.[ † ]Exodus 15:19Joshua 3:17Joshua 4:22Nehemiah 9:11Psalms 66:6Psalms 78:13Isaiah 63:131 Corinthians 10:1Hebrews 11:29Exodus 14:29Exodus 15:8Habakkuk 3:10

And the Egyptians chased after them—all Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen—and followed them into the sea. 24At morning watch, however, the Lord looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion.[ † ]Judges 7:19Exodus 13:21 25He caused their chariot wheels to wobble, so that they had difficulty driving. “Let us flee from the Israelites,” said the Egyptians, “for the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!”[ † ]Exodus 7:5Exodus 14:4-14, 18

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its normal state. As the Egyptians were retreating, the Lord swept them into the sea.[ † ]Joshua 4:18Exodus 15:1-7Deuteronomy 11:4Nehemiah 9:11Psalms 78:53Hebrews 11:29 28The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had chased the Israelites into the sea.
