The Lord answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.[ † ]Exodus 4:16Jeremiah 1:10Exodus 4:15-16 2You are to speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his land.[ † ]Exodus 4:15Deuteronomy 18:18

But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I will multiply My signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,[ † ]Exodus 4:21Exodus 9:12Exodus 11:9Acts 7:36Exodus 4:7Deuteronomy 4:34

Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay My hand on Egypt, and by mighty acts of judgment I will bring the divisions of My people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.[ † ]Exodus 3:19-20Exodus 10:1Exodus 11:9Exodus 9:14Exodus 6:6Exodus 12:12 5And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.”[ † ]Exodus 7:17Exodus 8:22Exodus 14:4-18Psalms 9:16Exodus 9:15Exodus 3:20Exodus 6:6Exodus 12:51

So Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded them.[ † ]Exodus 7:2 7Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.[ † ]Deuteronomy 29:5Deuteronomy 31:2Deuteronomy 34:7Acts 7:23-30Numbers 33:39

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ you are to say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a serpent.”[ † ]Exodus 10:1Isaiah 7:11John 2:18John 6:30Exodus 4:2-3, 17

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.[ † ]Exodus 7:9Exodus 4:3

But Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers and magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same things by their magic arts.[ † ]Genesis 41:8Daniel 2:22 Timothy 3:8Exodus 7:22Exodus 8:7-182 Timothy 3:9Revelation 13:13-14 12Each one threw down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up the other staffs.

Still, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go.[ † ]Exodus 8:15Exodus 10:1-20, 27 15Go to Pharaoh in the morning as you see him walking out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake.[ † ]Exodus 2:5Exodus 8:20Exodus 4:2-3Exodus 7:10 16Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let My people go, so that they may worship Me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.[ † ]Exodus 3:13-18Exodus 4:22Exodus 3:12-18Exodus 4:23Exodus 5:1-3Exodus 8:1 17This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord. Behold, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will turn to blood.[ † ]Exodus 5:2Exodus 7:5Exodus 10:2Psalms 9:16Ezekiel 25:17Exodus 4:9Exodus 7:20Revelation 11:6Revelation 16:4-6 18The fish in the Nile will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink its water.’”[ † ]Exodus 7:24

And the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over their rivers and canals and ponds and all the reservoirs—that they may become blood.’ There will be blood throughout the land of Egypt, even in the vessels of wood and stone.”[ † ]Exodus 8:5-6, 16Exodus 9:22Exodus 10:12-21Exodus 14:21-26

Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded; in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised the staff and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was turned to blood.[ † ]Exodus 17:5Psalms 78:44Psalms 105:29-30 21The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.[ † ]Exodus 7:18

But the magicians of Egypt did the same things by their magic arts. So Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.[ † ]Exodus 7:11Exodus 8:7Exodus 3:19Exodus 7:3 23Instead, Pharaoh turned around, went into his palace, and did not take any of this to heart. 24So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, because they could not drink the water from the river.

And seven full days passed after the Lord had struck the Nile.
