After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden.[ † ]Matthew 26:30-36Mark 14:26-32Luke 22:392 Samuel 15:231 Kings 2:371 Kings 15:132 Kings 23:4-6, 122 Chronicles 15:162 Chronicles 29:162 Chronicles 30:14Jeremiah 31:40 2Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.[ † ]Luke 21:37Luke 22:39 3So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.[ † ]Matthew 26:47-56Mark 14:43-50Luke 22:47-53Acts 1:16
Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking?”[ † ]John 6:64John 13:1-3John 19:28
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.[ † ]Matthew 21:11Mark 1:24Mark 14:67Mark 16:6Luke 18:37Luke 24:19Psalms 41:9Matthew 20:18Matthew 26:21John 13:21 6When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.
“I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.” 9This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”[ † ]John 6:39John 17:12
Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.[ † ]Matthew 26:51Mark 14:47Luke 22:49-50
“Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”[ † ]Matthew 20:22Matthew 26:39Mark 14:36Luke 22:42
Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.[ † ]Matthew 26:57Luke 3:2John 18:24Acts 4:6Matthew 26:3John 11:49-51 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.[ † ]John 11:50
Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.[ † ]Matthew 26:58Mark 14:54Luke 22:54John 20:2-5 16But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.[ † ]Matthew 26:69Mark 14:66-68Luke 22:55-57
At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.[ † ]Matthew 26:34
Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.
Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.[ † ]Matthew 26:55Luke 4:15John 8:26John 6:59Mark 14:49John 7:14-28 21Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”[ † ]Mark 12:37
When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”[ † ]Job 16:10Isaiah 50:6Jeremiah 20:2Lamentations 3:30Acts 23:2
Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”
Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.[ † ]Matthew 26:57Luke 3:2Acts 4:6John 11:49
Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”[ † ]Matthew 26:71-75Mark 14:69-72Luke 22:58-62
One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”
Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.[ † ]Matthew 26:74Mark 14:72Luke 22:60John 13:38
Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.[ † ]Matthew 27:2Mark 15:1Luke 23:1Acts 3:13John 11:55Acts 10:28Acts 11:3
So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”[ † ]Matthew 27:11-14Mark 15:2-5Luke 23:2-3
“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”
“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied. 32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.[ † ]Matthew 20:17-19Matthew 26:2Mark 10:33Luke 18:32John 3:14John 8:28John 12:32-33
Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”[ † ]Matthew 27:11
“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”
“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”[ † ]1 Timothy 6:13Daniel 2:44Daniel 7:14Luke 12:14John 6:15John 8:15
“Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”[ † ]Matthew 5:17Matthew 20:28Luke 4:43Luke 12:49Luke 19:10John 3:17John 9:39John 10:10John 12:47Isaiah 55:4Revelation 1:5John 14:6John 8:47John 10:271 John 3:191 John 4:6
“What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.[ † ]Isaiah 53:9Matthew 27:24Luke 23:4John 19:4-61 Peter 2:22-24 39But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover.
