When Jesus had finished saying all these things, He told His disciples, 2“You know that the Passover is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”[ † ]Matthew 27:35Mark 14:1-2Luke 22:1-2John 13:1John 19:18
At that time the chief priests and elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,[ † ]Psalms 2:2John 11:47Acts 4:25 4and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.[ † ]John 11:47Acts 4:25-28 5“But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”[ † ]Matthew 21:26
While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,[ † ]Matthew 8:2Mark 14:3-9Luke 7:37-39John 11:1-2John 12:1-8 7a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He reclined at the table.
When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and asked, “Why this waste?[ † ]John 12:4 9This perfume could have been sold at a high price, and the money given to the poor.”
Aware of this, Jesus asked, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful deed to Me. 11The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.[ † ]Deuteronomy 15:11Mark 14:7John 12:8Matthew 18:20Matthew 28:20John 13:33John 14:19John 16:5-28John 17:11 12By pouring this perfume on Me, she has prepared My body for burial.[ † ]Matthew 27:60Luke 23:53John 19:38-42 13Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Then one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests[ † ]Mark 14:10-11Luke 22:3-6John 13:2-30Matthew 10:4 15and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver.[ † ]Exodus 21:32Zechariah 11:12Matthew 27:3 16So from then on Judas looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”[ † ]Exodus 12:6-18-20
He answered, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him that the Teacher says, ‘My time is near. I will keep the Passover with My disciples at your house.’”[ † ]Luke 9:51John 12:23John 13:1John 17:1 19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
When evening came, Jesus was reclining with the twelve disciples.[ † ]Mark 14:17-21Luke 22:14John 13:21 21And while they were eating, He said to them, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”[ † ]Matthew 26:46Mark 14:42Luke 22:21-23John 6:70-71John 13:21
They were deeply grieved and began to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?”
Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me.[ † ]Psalms 41:9Luke 22:21John 13:18 24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”[ † ]Psalms 22Daniel 9:26Mark 9:12Luke 24:25-26, 46Acts 17:2-3Acts 26:22-231 Corinthians 15:3Matthew 27:3-5Luke 17:1Acts 1:16-20John 17:12Acts 1:25
Then Judas, who would betray Him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said it yourself.”
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body.”[ † ]Mark 14:22-25Luke 22:17-201 Corinthians 11:23-251 Peter 2:24
Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.[ † ]Mark 14:23 28This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.[ † ]Exodus 24:8Leviticus 17:11Hebrews 9:20Jeremiah 31:31Matthew 20:28Romans 5:15Hebrews 9:22 29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.”[ † ]Mark 14:25Luke 22:18Acts 10:41
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.[ † ]Mark 14:26-31Luke 22:31-34
But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”[ † ]Matthew 28:7-10, 16Mark 14:28Mark 16:7John 21:1
Peter said to Him, “Even if all fall away on account of You, I never will.”
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”[ † ]Matthew 26:74-75Mark 14:30Luke 22:34John 13:38
Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the other disciples said the same thing.
Then Jesus went with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and He told them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”[ † ]Mark 14:32-35Luke 22:39-40John 18:1
He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.[ † ]Matthew 4:21Matthew 17:1Mark 5:37 38Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”[ † ]John 12:27
Going a little farther, He fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”[ † ]Mark 14:36Luke 22:42Hebrews 5:7-9John 12:27Matthew 20:22Psalms 40:8Isaiah 50:5John 5:30John 6:38Philippians 2:8
Then Jesus returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. “Were you not able to keep watch with Me for one hour?” He asked Peter. 41“Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”[ † ]Mark 13:33Mark 14:38Luke 22:40-46Ephesians 6:18Psalms 103:14-16Romans 7:15Romans 8:23Galatians 5:17
A second time He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.” 43And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
So He left them and went away once more and prayed a third time, saying the same thing. 45Then He returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.[ † ]Matthew 17:22-23Matthew 20:18-19 46Rise, let us go! See, My betrayer is approaching!”
While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and elders of the people.[ † ]Mark 14:43-50Luke 22:47-53John 18:3-11Acts 1:16
Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him.” 49Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.[ † ]2 Samuel 20:9Proverbs 27:6
“Friend,” Jesus replied, “do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus, and arrested Him.[ † ]Psalms 41:9Psalms 55:13 51At this, one of Jesus’ companions drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.[ † ]Mark 14:47Luke 22:50John 18:10
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him. “For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.[ † ]Genesis 9:6Revelation 13:10 53Are you not aware that I can call on My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?[ † ]2 Kings 6:17Daniel 7:10 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”[ † ]Isaiah 50:6Isaiah 53:2-11Luke 24:25-27, 44-46John 19:28Acts 13:29Acts 17:3Acts 26:23
At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw? Every day I sat teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me.
But this has all happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.[ † ]Lamentations 4:20Zechariah 13:7Matthew 26:31Mark 14:27John 18:15
Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and elders had gathered.[ † ]Matthew 17:22Mark 14:53-65Luke 22:54John 18:12-19-24 58But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. And he went in and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.[ † ]John 18:15-16
Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death.[ † ]Exodus 20:16Psalms 35:11
But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward[ † ]Psalms 27:12Psalms 35:11Mark 14:55Acts 6:13Deuteronomy 19:15 61and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”[ † ]Matthew 27:40Mark 14:58Mark 15:29John 2:19Acts 6:14
So the high priest stood up and asked Him, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”[ † ]Mark 14:60
But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “I charge You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.”[ † ]Psalms 38:13-14Isaiah 53:7Matthew 27:12-14Acts 8:32Leviticus 5:11 Samuel 14:24-26Luke 22:67-71
“You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered. “But I say to all of you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[ † ]Daniel 7:13Matthew 16:27Matthew 24:30Matthew 25:31Luke 21:27John 1:51Romans 14:101 Thessalonians 4:16Revelation 1:7Psalms 110:1Acts 7:55
At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “He has blasphemed! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.[ † ]2 Kings 18:37John 10:30-36
What do you think?” “He deserves to die,” they answered.[ † ]Leviticus 24:16Matthew 20:18John 19:7
Then they spit in His face and struck Him. Others slapped Him[ † ]Job 16:10Isaiah 50:6Isaiah 53:3Lamentations 3:30Matthew 27:30Micah 5:1Luke 22:63-65John 19:3 68and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit You?”[ † ]Mark 14:65Luke 22:64
Meanwhile, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came up to him. “You also were with Jesus the Galilean,” she said.[ † ]Mark 14:66-72Luke 22:55-62John 18:16-18, 25-27
But he denied it before them all: “I do not know what you are talking about.”
When Peter had gone out to the gateway, another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man!”
After a little while, those standing nearby came up to Peter. “Surely you are one of them,” they said, “for your accent gives you away.”[ † ]Mark 14:70Luke 22:59John 18:26
At that he began to curse and swear to them, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.[ † ]Matthew 26:34Mark 14:71Luke 22:34John 13:38
Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.[ † ]Matthew 26:34Luke 22:61John 13:38
