Verse of the Day

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

The Portrait of Love

In the middle of addressing the Corinthian church's spiritual pride and divisiveness, the Apostle Paul pauses to paint the most beautiful portrait of love ever written. The believers in Corinth were obsessed with spiritual gifts, competing over who was most gifted or spiritual. Into this chaos, Paul introduces love as the "more excellent way" that must be the foundation of all Christian practice. Notice how Paul defines love not by feelings but by actions. Love is patient when others test our limits, love is kind when harshness would be easier.

This kind of love doesn't show off or look out for only itself. It doesn't hold grudges or keep score, or find secret pleasure in another's failure. Instead, it celebrates truth and righteousness wherever they appear.

The final verse reveals love's supernatural endurance. It says biblical love "bears all things," it protects and covers. It "believes all things," not gullibly, but with a readiness to trust and hope the best. It "hopes all things," refusing cynicism even when disappointed. It "endures all things," standing firm when everything else collapses. This is no mere human affection, this is agape love, the very love God demonstrates toward us in Christ. We were His enemies, yet He was patient, we were undeserving, yet He was kind. We rejected Him, yet He did not keep a record of wrongs but covered our sins with His blood.

As believers, we are called to love others with this same supernatural love. The Holy Spirit produces this fruit in us as we abide in Christ. Today, ask yourself: In my marriage, my workplace, my church, am I displaying this patient, kind, humble love? Where am I keeping score or insisting on my own ways? The love described here is impossible in our own strength, but gloriously possible through Christ who lives in us. Let His love flow through you today.

“
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal.
