Mercies New Every Morning

The book of Lamentations was written during one of Israel's darkest hours. Jerusalem lay in ruins, the temple was destroyed, and God's people were scattered in exile. From the depths of this devastation, the prophet Jeremiah penned these words of hope.

The Hebrew word for "steadfast love" is hesed, describing God's covenantal faithfulness that cannot be broken, even when His people have been unfaithful. What makes this passage remarkable is its context, Jeremiah isn't writing from a mountaintop experience or a season of blessing, he's surrounded by rubble and despair but he declares a profound biblical truth: God's mercies are not a finite resource that can be depleted. They are renewed with the rising of each sun. This isn't positive thinking or wishful optimism, it's anchored in the unchanging character of God Himself.

The phrase "new every morning" reminds us that we serve a God who doesn't recycle yesterday's grace. Each dawn brings fresh compassion, renewed strength, and another opportunity to experience His faithfulness. When we wake up burdened by yesterday's failures or tomorrow's anxieties, we can rest in this promise: God's mercy counter resets at sunrise.

How does this truth change our daily walk? First, it frees us from the weight of accumulated guilt. God isn't keeping a running tally of our shortcomings. Second, it gives us courage to face each day. Whatever challenges await, His grace is sufficient and freshly supplied. Third, it calls us to gratitude. Before our feet hit the floor each morning, we can thank God that His mercies have already arrived ahead of us.

Great is His faithfulness. Not was. Not will be. Is. Present tense. Active. Available. Abundant.
This very morning, His mercies are waiting for you.

God's mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water, or deprive the sun of its light, or make space too narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God.
