Psalm 31:24
“Be strong and courageous, all you who hope in the LORD.”
Courage in the Waiting Room
King David wrote this psalm while running for his life. Enemies surrounded him, friends had abandoned him, and he felt trapped with nowhere to turn. Yet in the middle of his fear and exhaustion, David discovered something powerful: God gives strength to those who wait on Him. The phrase "be strong" here isn't about gritting your teeth and toughing it out alone. The Hebrew word carries the idea of being firmly established, like a tree with deep roots. David is saying that real strength comes from being anchored in God, not from our own willpower. Notice who this promise is for: "all you who wait for the Lord."
Waiting is hard, we live in a world of instant everything, but God often works on a different timeline. Maybe you're waiting for healing, for a job, for a broken relationship to mend, or for God to answer a prayer you've prayed a thousand times. The waiting can feel like weakness, but David says it's actually where courage grows. When we wait on the Lord, we're not sitting idle, we're actively trusting that God sees us, knows our situation, and is working even when we can't see it. That kind of trust takes real courage, it means choosing to believe God's promises when our circumstances scream otherwise.
Here's the beautiful truth: God doesn't ask us to manufacture this courage on our own. He says "let your heart take courage", it's a gift He gives. If you feel weak today, remember that your strength doesn't come from having it all together. It comes from knowing the One who holds you together. God is building something in you that instant answers could never produce. Your faithful waiting is not wasted time, it's where God does His deepest work in your heart.
God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which He must work. Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.— A.W. Tozer
