1 John 4:16
“And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”
Staying Close to the God Who Is Love
John was known as "the beloved disciple," and it shows in everything he wrote. By the time he penned this letter, he was an old man who had walked with Jesus, watched Him die, and seen the empty tomb. Decades of living with that reality shaped him into someone who could write these words with deep confidence: "God is love."
That phrase is one of the most powerful in all of Scripture. John doesn't just say God is loving, like it's one quality among many. He says God IS love. Love is not something God does from time to time. It is who He is at the very core of His being. Everything He does flows from that.
And here's the beautiful part. John says we can "come to know and to believe" this love. It's not just a fact to memorize. It's a truth we can experience and trust. You can know in your heart, not just your head, that God's love for you is real.
The word "abides" means to stay, to remain, to make your home somewhere. John is painting a picture of a life lived close to God, not just visiting Him on Sundays. When we stay in God's love, when we keep returning to it and resting in it, God lives in us and we live in Him. That's the kind of relationship Jesus died to make possible.
So today, don't just think about God's love. Sit with it. Let it settle over you like a warm blanket on a cold morning. If you've been running on empty, feeling far from God, or carrying guilt you can't shake, this verse is your invitation to come home. God's love is not waiting to scold you. It's waiting to welcome you.
You don't have to be clever to please God, just truthful and real. He knows you better than you know yourself.— Corrie ten Boom
