Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
Saved by Mercy, Not Merit
Paul wrote his letter to Titus to help a young pastor lead a church on the island of Crete. The people there had a rough reputation, and the church needed clear teaching about how Christians should live. Before Paul talked about good behavior, he made sure Titus understood something important: our good behavior never earns us a place with God.
Titus 3:5 is one of the clearest verses in the Bible about how salvation works, it says God saved us "not because of works done by us in righteousness". That means no amount of church attendance, good deeds, or moral living can get us into a right relationship with God. If we are honest, that is actually a relief, none of us could ever do enough.
So how are we saved? "According to his own mercy." God looked at us, knowing every failure and every sin, and chose to save us anyway, that is mercy, not getting what we deserve. He did this through "the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit." When we trust in Jesus, God does not just forgive us, He makes us new. The Holy Spirit moves in and begins changing us from the inside out, it is like being born all over again, just as Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3.
This truth should change how we see ourselves and how we treat others. You are not saved because you are good enough, you are saved because God is merciful. That means you have nothing to brag about and no reason to look down on anyone else.
Today, if you feel like you have to earn God's love, let this verse remind you that the work is already done. Trust in His mercy, not your own effort, and let the Holy Spirit keep doing His renewing work in you.
It is not your hold of Christ that saves you, but His hold of you.— Charles Spurgeon
