The King Who Wore Our Shame
These two verses sit right in the middle of one of the darkest moments in human history. Jesus, the Son of God, is standing before Roman soldiers who have no idea who He really is. They braid thorns into a crown and shove it onto His head. They throw a purple robe over His bleeding shoulders. Then they mock Him, calling out "Hail, King of the Jews!" like it's a joke, and hit Him with their hands.
The cruelty here is hard to sit with, but here's what makes it even more striking: they were telling the truth without knowing it. Jesus really is the King. Not just of the Jews, but of every nation, every person, every moment in history. The thorns on His head were meant to humiliate Him, but they were actually a picture of something deeper. Thorns first appeared in Genesis 3, when sin entered the world and the ground was cursed, now the King of creation wears that curse on His own head, taking it on Himself so we wouldn't have to carry it forever.
The soldiers thought they were stripping Jesus of His dignity, but nothing could take away who He is, and nothing they did to Him was an accident. Every wound, every mocking word, every blow was part of the plan to bring us back to God.
Today, if you're carrying shame or feels like life has knocked you around, remember this: Jesus knows what it feels like to be mocked and beaten down. He didn't stay on a throne far away from our pain, He walked right into it. He wore our shame so we could wear His righteousness.
Thank Him today for a love that didn't flinch, even when it cost Him everything.
He was not only the greatest teacher who ever lived, He is also the only Savior who ever died for our sins.— Billy Graham
