야고보서 1:2-3
“내 형제들아 너희가 여러가지 시험을 만나거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는줄 너희가 앎이라”
It Is Finished
There is no more powerful sentence in all of human history than the three words Jesus spoke from the cross: "It is finished".
To understand what He meant, it helps to know the Greek word behind that phrase. Jesus said "Tetelestai", a word that people in the ancient world used when a debt had been fully paid off. Merchants would stamp it on a bill to say the account was settled, nothing left owing. When Jesus cried out those words, He was declaring that the debt of our sin had been paid in full, completely, once and for all.
Think about what was happening in that moment: Jesus had been beaten, mocked, and nailed to a cross, the crowd saw a man dying in shame, but something far greater was taking place. God was keeping every promise He had ever made, every sacrifice in the Old Testament, every lamb offered at the altar, every drop of blood shed in the temple, all of it was pointing forward to this moment. Jesus was the final sacrifice, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
He did not say "I am finished", as if He had been defeated, He said "It is finished," as if a great work had been completed, and it had. The cross was not a tragedy, it was a victory.
For you today, this means your forgiveness is not something you earn or maintain through good behavior. It was purchased by Jesus and handed to you as a gift. You cannot add to what He has already done, you simply receive it by faith.
If you are carrying guilt today, hear these words again: it is finished. The price has been paid. Rest in that truth, and let it fill your heart with gratitude and peace.
It is not your hold of Christ that saves you, but his hold of you.— Charles Spurgeon
