Romans 5:8
“But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Finishing Well With Faith
The apostle Paul wrote those words in his last letter to Timothy from a Roman prison, knowing his execution was near. He wasn't looking back with regret, he was looking back with peace.
Paul uses three simple pictures to describe his life: a fight, a race, and a trust kept. Each one tells us something important. The Christian life isn't always easy, it's a fight. There are real struggles, real temptations, and real enemies of our faith, but Paul calls it a "good" fight, because it's worth fighting. The race isn't about being the fastest, it's about finishing, and keeping the faith means holding on to Jesus through every season, the bright ones and the dark ones alike.
What makes this verse so powerful is the context. Paul wasn't writing from a comfortable chair at the end of a long, easy life. He was in chains, he had been abandoned by some friends and opposed by many enemies, and yet there is no bitterness in his words. There is only confidence. That confidence didn't come from his own strength, it came from knowing that Jesus had been with him every step of the way.
Maybe you're in the middle of your race right now, and it feels hard. Maybe you're tired, or you've stumbled, or you're not sure you have what it takes to keep going. Paul's words are for you. You don't have to finish perfectly, you just have to finish faithfully.
Ask God today to give you the strength to keep going. Lean on His grace, stay close to His Word, and trust that the One who started a good work in you will see it through to the end.
I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.— William Allen White
