Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Faith That Does Not Bend
Few moments in the Bible are as bold as this one. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are standing before the most powerful king in the world. Behind them is a furnace so hot it would kill the soldiers who threw them in, and yet, they stand firm.
These three young men had been taken from their homeland and brought to Babylon as captives. They had already shown their commitment to God by refusing the king's food, now they faced something far greater. Bow to the golden statue, or burn, that was the choice.
Their answer is one of the most remarkable statements of faith in all of Scripture. They told the king plainly: God is able to save us. They believed that with their whole hearts, but then they added three words that change everything: "But if not". Even if God did not rescue them from the fire, they would not bow. Their obedience was not tied to the outcome, they trusted God whether He saved them or not.
This is the kind of faith God calls us to. It is easy to trust God when life is going well, it is much harder when the furnace is hot and the answer has not come yet. Real faith says, "I will follow You no matter what happens". It is not faith in a result, it is faith in a Person.
Maybe you are facing your own kind of furnace right now. A hard diagnosis, a broken relationship, a door that will not open no matter how much you pray. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remind us that God is worthy of our trust even in the fire, and that He is present right there in the middle of it with us.
Choose today to trust Him, whatever the outcome may be.
Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right.— Max Lucado
