When God Speaks Into Darkness

Genesis 1 is by far the most incredible and powerful opening in all of literature. In just three verses, we see who God is, what He can do, and how He works. Before anything existed, God was already there. That truth alone is worth sitting with for a moment.

The scene, described by Moses, is striking. The recently created earth was empty, shapeless, and covered in darkness. There was nothing good, nothing ordered, nothing alive, and yet, the Spirit of God was hovering right over it. He did not turn away from the chaos, He moved toward it.

Then God spoke four simple words: "Let there be light", and light came. Just like that. No struggle, no effort, no long process. God's word carries that kind of power. He did not need raw materials or a plan drawn up in advance, He simply spoke, and creation obeyed.

This is the God we worship. He is not distant or uninvolved, He is the Creator who steps into emptiness and brings something beautiful out of nothing.

Here is what makes this personal for us. Many of us know what it feels like to be in a dark season. Life can feel shapeless and out of control, like nothing makes sense anymore, but the same God who hovered over the darkness at the beginning of time is present with you right now. He has not changed.

If you are in a dark place today, take heart. God is not afraid of your mess. He does not need perfect conditions to work, He just needs to speak. He still speaks through His Word, through prayer, and through the Holy Spirit who lives in every believer.

Ask Him today to speak light into whatever feels dark in your life. He is more than able.
