約翰福音 16:33
“我將這些事告訴你們,是要叫你們在我裏面有平安。在世上,你們有苦難;但你們可以放心,我已經勝了世界。」”
The Word Who Brings Life
John opens his Gospel in a way that would have grabbed every reader's attention. He starts with the same three words as the book of Genesis: "In the beginning", but where Genesis shows us the creation of the world, John takes us even further back. Before anything existed, the Word was already there, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John uses the Greek word "Logos" when he says "the Word". To Jewish readers, this pointed to God's powerful, creative speech from Genesis. To Greek readers, it meant the reason and order behind all things. John is saying that Jesus is the answer both groups were looking for, He is not just a teacher or a prophet. He is God himself, present before time began.
Then John says something that should stop us in our tracks: everything that exists was made through Him. The chair you are sitting in, the sky outside your window, the breath in your lungs, none of it came to be without Jesus. He is not a part of creation, He is the Creator.
After that power beginning, comes the heart of it: "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men". Jesus does not just give life, He is life. He does not just point us toward the light, He is the light. That means if you are feeling lost, empty, or in the dark today, the answer is not a plan or a program, the answer is a Person.
This is the good news of the Gospel. The same Jesus who spoke the universe into existence stepped into it to find you. He came not to condemn but to give life, and to give it fully. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Take a moment today and simply thank Him for being your life and your light.
God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man.— C.S. Lewis
