1 Peter 3:14-15
“But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear; do not be shaken.” But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect”
Ready to Speak of Hope
Peter wrote these words to Christians living under real pressure. They were scattered across the Roman Empire, treated as outsiders, and sometimes facing hostility simply for following Jesus. Sound familiar? The world has always had a complicated relationship with people who live differently because of their faith.
In this passage, Peter gives two connected pieces of advice. First, don't be afraid, fear has a way of silencing us. When we worry too much about what others think, we pull back, go quiet, and miss the chance to share what God has done in our lives. Peter is telling us to not let that happen, instead set Christ apart as Lord in your heart. When Jesus is truly at the center, fear loses its grip. Second, be ready. The word Peter uses for "defense" is the Greek word apologia, which is where we get the word apologetics from. Peter isn't calling everyone to become a scholar or a debater, he's simply saying: know why you believe what you believe, and be willing to talk about it when someone asks.
People ask when they see something worth asking about and here's the beautiful part, when your life reflects genuine peace, real joy, and steady hope in hard times, people notice. They want to know where that comes from. Your life becomes the invitation, and your words become the answer. Notice how Peter tells us to do it: with gentleness and respect. Not with arguments or arrogance, not with a lecture. Just a warm, honest conversation about the hope you carry because of Jesus.
Today, ask God to give you both the courage to speak and the grace to do it well. Someone around you may be quietly wondering about the hope they see in you.
Always be prepared to give an answer, but make sure your life is asking the question.— Timothy Keller
