갈라디아서 5:1
“그리스도께서 우리로 자유케 하려고 자유를 주셨으니 그러므로 굳세게 서서 다시는 종의 멍에를 메지 말라”
Standing in the Freedom Christ Gives
There is something strange about a freed prisoner who keeps returning to stand outside the cell door.
Paul wrote Galatians to people doing something very much like that. They had trusted Christ, received the Holy Spirit, and been set free from the law as a means of earning God's favor. Then false teachers arrived and told them they needed to add religious rules and rituals to their faith. Paul was stunned, he wrote this letter with urgency and heat because the gospel itself was at stake.
The opening phrase of Galatians 5:1 is worth slowing down for: "For freedom Christ has set us free". That might sound like Paul is repeating himself, but he is not, he is saying that freedom is not just a side benefit of salvation, it is the whole point. Christ did not set us free so we could trade one set of chains for another, He set us free so that we could actually live free.
Paul does not stop there, he adds a command: "Stand firm". Freedom has to be held onto because it is possible to be free and still choose to live as if you are not. Old habits, old guilt, old religious performance can creep back in. We start believing again that God's love depends on how well we do. That is the yoke Paul warns against, and it is a heavy one.
Practically, this means checking what you are trusting for your standing before God. Is it Christ alone? Or have you quietly added your church attendance, your prayer record, your good behavior? Grace is not a starting point that you then have to maintain by effort. It is the whole foundation.
You are free. Live like it.
The grace of God is not a fragile thing that can be destroyed by your failures.— Timothy Keller
