約翰福音 8:31-32
“耶穌對信他的 猶太 人說:「你們若常常遵守我的道,就真是我的門徒; 你們必曉得真理,真理必叫你們得以自由。」”
The Truth That Sets Us Free
Freedom is a word everyone wants, but few people agree on what it actually means.
Jesus speaks these words to people who already believed in Him, and that detail matters because He is not calling strangers to an abstract idea. He is speaking to followers, people who had heard Him teach and had placed their trust in Him, and yet He tells them that staying in His word is what will make them truly His disciples. Belief was the door, but abiding is the life lived inside that door.
The word "abide" means to remain, to stay, to make your home somewhere. Jesus is calling His followers not to a one-time decision but to a daily, ongoing relationship with His teaching. Think of it like a marriage, saying "I do" starts everything, but love grows through years of showing up, listening, and choosing each other again and again. Abiding in the Word looks something like that.
Then comes the promise: knowing the truth, and the truth setting us free. In the Jewish context of this passage, freedom was a loaded word. Many in Jesus' audience were proud of their heritage as descendants of Abraham and bristled at the idea that they needed freeing from anything, but Jesus is pointing to a deeper bondage than political chains. He is talking about the grip that sin has on a person's heart, the kind of slavery no army can break.
The truth He offers is not just a set of correct beliefs, the truth is a Person. Later in John 14:6, Jesus says plainly, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" To know the truth is to know Him.
Today, open the Word with that in mind. You are not just reading a book., you are sitting with the One who set you free.
