2 Corinthians 3:17-18
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
Becoming What We Behold
Most of us know that what we spend our time looking at changes us. Spend enough hours scrolling through comparison, anxiety, or anger, and it shapes how you see the world. Paul understood this principle at a spiritual level, and he turned it into a hopeful truth for the Christian life.
In 2 Corinthians 3, Paul is making a contrast between the old covenant and the new. Under the old covenant, Moses had to veil his face after meeting with God because the people couldn't bear the reflected glory, but now, because of Christ, the veil is gone. We don't approach God through a system of rules we can never fully keep, we come to Him directly, through the Spirit, with nothing hiding our faces. And here is the stunning thing: when we look at the Lord with that kind of open, unobstructed gaze, we start to look like Him. Paul says we are being transformed "from one degree of glory to another". This isn't a single dramatic moment, it's a slow, steady, real process. The Holy Spirit is doing the work, we are not grinding our way into holiness by sheer effort, we are being changed by beholding.
This matters for how you structure your days. If transformation comes through beholding, then what you look at spiritually carries real weight. Time in Scripture, honest prayer, worship that focuses your heart on who God actually is, these aren't just religious habits, they are the means by which the Spirit does His quiet, patient work in you.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. That freedom isn't just freedom from guilt, though it includes that. It's also freedom to become who God created you to be.
You are not stuck. You are being changed, one small degree at a time, by a God who never stops working.
We are always in the presence of God. There is never a non-sacred moment. His presence never diminishes. Our awareness of it may falter, but the reality of it never changes.— John Ortberg
