Ecclesiastes 3:11
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.”
Made for More Than This Moment
There is something restless inside every person. You finish a good meal and still feel a quiet hunger. You reach a goal you worked toward for years, and within weeks you are already looking for the next thing. Philosophers have written about this for centuries, and yet Solomon said it plainly three thousand years ago: God has placed eternity in the human heart.
Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes near the end of a long life. He had tried everything, wealth, wisdom, pleasure, great building projects, and deep study. His conclusion was not cynicism, though, it was honesty. He recognized that God has woven something into us that this world simply cannot satisfy. We feel the weight of time passing, we sense that things should mean something, and we reach for something bigger than what we can see or hold. That longing is not a flaw, it is a fingerprint, God put it there on purpose.
The second part of the verse is just as important: we cannot fully figure out what God has done from beginning to end. That is humbling, we want to see the whole picture right now, to understand why things unfold the way they do, but God holds the full story, and we hold only the chapter we are living in. This is where trust becomes real, we should not trust because everything makes sense, but trust because we know the Author.
If you are in a season where life feels incomplete or confusing, let that restlessness point you upward. Your longing for something more is not a problem to fix. It is an invitation to draw closer to the God who made you for eternity and who is making all things beautiful in His time.
Rest in that today.
If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.— C.S. Lewis
