창세기 1:27
“하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고”
Called by Name, Called Friend
There is a word in these verses that should stop us cold: friend. Jesus does not say it casually, He is in the upper room, just hours before His arrest. He knows what is coming, and in that heavy, holy moment, He looks at His disciples and says, "I have called you friends".
In the ancient world, the gap between a master and a servant was total. A servant worked, obeyed, and was not trusted with the reasons behind any order, that was simply how things worked. Jesus draws His disciples out of that distance and pulls them close. He tells them, "Everything I have heard from My Father, I have made known to you". That is not how masters talk, that is how friends talk.
This is the heart of the gospel. God did not just send a Savior to rescue us from a distance, He sent His Son to walk with us, eat with us, and ultimately die for us. Jesus defines the depth of this friendship plainly: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends". He was not speaking in theory, He was describing what He was about to do on the cross. Notice that He calls this love a commandment: "Love one another as I have loved you". The standard is not a warm feeling or a kind gesture, it is the kind of love that costs something, the kind that puts others first even when it is hard.
So here is the practical question for today: Who in your life needs to feel the weight of that kind of love? A neighbor who is struggling, a friend who has drifted, a coworker who seems invisible to everyone else?
Jesus called you friend so that you could carry that friendship into the world around you.
God does not love us because we are valuable. We are valuable because God loves us.— Martin Luther
