Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Chosen Before Time Began
Before the first star was lit, before the first wave broke on any shore, God already knew your name.
That is what Paul is saying in Ephesians 1:4-5. Writing from prison, Paul opens his letter not with complaints but with worship, and he reaches back further than creation itself to show believers who they truly are. The church at Ephesus was a mix of Jewish and Gentile believers trying to figure out where they fit. Paul's answer is breathtaking: you were chosen in Christ before the world was made.
The word Paul uses for "adoption" was well understood in the Roman world. A Roman father could legally adopt a child, and once he did, that child had every right of a natural-born son. Debts were canceled, the old life was gone, a new family name was given. Paul says God did something like that for us, not because He had to, but because He wanted to. The phrase "according to the purpose of his will" makes clear this was no accident or afterthought, it was God's plan from the very start.
The core truth here is that belonging to God is not something you earned or stumbled into. You were chosen, in Christ, before time, with love as the reason. That should change how you see yourself on a hard day when you feel forgotten or unworthy. You are not an outsider hoping to be let in, you are a child who was always wanted.
Today, let that sink in before the noise of the day starts. When a task feels too big or a failure feels too heavy, come back to this: God chose you in love, and He will not un-choose you. Rest in that.
You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did.— Billy Graham
