1 Peter 3:15
“But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect”
A Father Who Gives Generously
Most of us know what it feels like to want something good for someone we love. A parent who scrapes together birthday money, a friend who drives across town at midnight, a neighbor who drops off a meal without being asked. You know that impulse to give good things to people we care about? Jesus says God feels that way about you, only far deeper and far wider than anything we can manage.
These two verses come near the end of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where He has been teaching about prayer. He uses a simple comparison: if ordinary, imperfect people know how to be generous toward those they love, then God, who is perfectly good and perfectly loving, will be even more generous with those who come to Him. The logic is almost disarming in how straightforward it is, because Jesus is not promising that God will give us whatever we want, He is promising that God's heart toward us is generous, not stingy, warm, not cold.
Then Jesus adds what we call the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. He says this single idea sums up the entire Law and the Prophets. That is a bold claim, but it makes sense. When we love God and trust His generosity, it frees us to be generous ourselves. We are not competing for scraps, we are children of a Father who has more than enough.
Today, think about how you are treating the people around you. Is there someone you have been holding back from, someone who needs a kind word, a second chance, or a little grace? Ask God to make you as generous toward others as He has been toward you. That is not just good advice. It is the heart of the whole story.
God is always previous. If I speak of seeking God, it is because He has first put the desire to seek Him in my heart.— Oswald Chambers
