约翰一书 1:9

“我们若认自己的罪, 神是信实的,是公义的,必要赦免我们的罪,洗净我们一切的不义。”

Called Children of God

There is a word in this verse that tends to get skipped over, and it changes everything. John doesn't say "See what kind of love the Father has offered us" or "extended to us". He says given. Past tense. Done. Settled.

Written near the end of the first century, 1 John was addressed to believers who were facing real pressure, both from false teachers inside the church and from a culture that had no category for what Christians believed. John wanted them to know who they were before he told them what to do. Identity first, then conduct.

So he holds up this staggering truth: God calls us His children. Not servants, not admirers, not students. Children. The word in Greek is "tekna", and it carries the warmth of a parent who genuinely claims you as their own. John adds three words that feel almost defiant: "and so we are". He isn't letting you soften it or spiritualize it into something more modest, he makes it pretty clear that you belong to God's family.

Then John names something that can be confusing for believers. The world won't fully understand you, because it didn't understand Jesus either. That sense of not quite fitting, of holding values that seem strange to those around you, isn't a sign something is wrong. It may be a sign something is very right.

John Calvin wrote, "We are not our own; we are God's". That truth cuts both ways. It means we don't have to earn our place, and we don't have to defend ourselves to the world for having one.

Today, if you feel like an outsider in your own culture, take that to God as a gift, not a wound. You were claimed by a Father who loves you completely. That is enough to stand on.
