Amos 5:24
“But let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
Thankfulness That Reaches Beyond Ourselves
Gratitude can shrink. It can become a private feeling, something we keep tucked inside, a quiet "thank you" whispered before a meal or at the end of a hard day, but the prayer David composed in 1 Chronicles 16 refuses to stay small.
This song was written to celebrate the arrival of the Ark of the Covenant in Jerusalem. Israel had been scattered, threatened, and pressed on every side by surrounding nations. So when David calls the people to give thanks, he is not writing from a place of comfort and ease, he is writing from a place of need. That is what makes this passage so honest.
Notice how the two parts of the prayer belong together. First, "give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever". Then, almost in the same breath, "Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us". Thanksgiving and need, praise and desperation, woven together in the same prayer. David is not pretending life is easy, he is choosing to trust that the God who is good will also be the God who rescues.
The word translated "steadfast love" here is the Hebrew word hesed. It means faithful, covenant love. A love that does not walk away when things get hard, a love that endures. David is not thanking God for circumstances, he is thanking God for character.
Here is the practical truth: you can give thanks before the rescue comes. You can praise God in the middle of the waiting, not because everything is fine, but because He is good and His love does not run out.
Today, bring both your gratitude and your need to God. He is big enough to hold them both.
It is not the level of our spirituality that we can depend on. It is God and nothing less than God, for the work is God's and the call is God's and everything is summed up in God.— Elisabeth Elliot
