Ephesians 1:7
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace”
Bought Back by Grace
Debt has a way of following you. You know the weight of it, that nagging sense that something is owed, that you haven't quite settled the account. Many of us carry a spiritual version of that weight, a quiet feeling that our failures haven't fully been dealt with. Paul's words in Ephesians 1:7 speak directly into that place.
Paul wrote this letter while under Roman house arrest, yet his words overflow with confidence and joy. He had seen the risen Christ, he knew what had been done on his behalf, and in this verse, he reaches for two powerful words side by side: redemption and forgiveness.
In the ancient world, redemption meant buying someone out of slavery or debt. It was a transaction that required a price, and Paul says that price was the blood of Jesus. God did not simply overlook our sin or wave it away. He paid for it, fully and finally, through His Son. That is not just mercy, it is costly mercy.
The word forgiveness carries the picture of a debt being cancelled, a record wiped clean. Not reduced, not renegotiated. Gone. Paul says all of this flows from "the riches of His grace", not from what we have done, but from what God has.
Here is what that means for you today. Whatever you are carrying, whatever failure you keep returning to in your mind, it has already been addressed at the cross. If you have trusted Christ, you are not a person waiting to be forgiven, you are a person who has been redeemed.
Let that settle in. Yes, confess what needs confessing, but then stand on what God has already done.
The account is not just balanced. It has been paid in full.
God does not love us because we are valuable. We are valuable because God loves us.— Martin Luther
