Verse of the Day

Proverbs 27:17

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

Sharpened for Something Greater

There is a quiet myth that faith grows best alone. Just you, your Bible, and God. While private time with Scripture is vital, the wisdom of Proverbs pushes back on the idea that we were made to walk this road in isolation.

Proverbs 27:17 comes from a collection of Solomon's wisdom, much of it drawn from everyday life in ancient Israel. A blacksmith sharpening iron against iron was a common sight. The friction wasn't damage, it was the whole point. One blade made another sharper, stronger, and more useful. Solomon saw in that ordinary image a picture of how God designed us to grow.

The core truth here is that God uses people to shape people. Not just pastors or teachers, but ordinary believers sitting across a table from one another. When you speak truth into a friend's life, when you ask the hard question, when you share what God has been teaching you, you are doing the work of iron on iron, and so are they, working on you.

This is where evangelism fits in a surprising way. Sharing your faith isn't just about the person who hasn't yet believed, it also sharpens you. Explaining what you believe forces you to know what you believe. Talking about grace, about Jesus, about why the cross matters, keeps your own faith clear and alive. Every honest conversation about the gospel is an act of sharpening, both for the one who hears and for the one who speaks.

Think about the people around you. Are you investing in other believers, speaking truth and receiving it? Are you stepping out to share your faith, which in turn deepens your own walk with God? Both of these are forms of iron sharpening iron.

Look for those relationships. Find a believer who will speak honestly with you, and then go be that person for someone who doesn't yet know Jesus. The church grows when believers are sharpened, and the world hears the gospel when sharpened believers go out and tell it.

God designed us to grow through each other. Do not try to do the Christian life alone.
