Luke 6:38
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
When Giving Opens the Door
We live in a world that tells us to hold on tight. Protect what you have, guard your resources, save for yourself first. Jesus says the opposite.
In Luke 6, Jesus is speaking to a crowd of ordinary people, many of them poor, many of them struggling. He is not giving them a financial tip, He is describing the generous nature of God and inviting His followers to reflect it. The word "measure" He uses would have been familiar to anyone who had ever bought grain at a market. When a generous seller filled your container, he didn't just pour grain to the rim. He pressed it down, shook it to settle, then heaped more on top until it spilled over. That's the picture Jesus paints of how God gives back to those who give freely.
The core truth here is not that generosity is a transaction, Jesus is not promising that every dollar you give comes back multiplied. He is showing us something about the character of God. God is not stingy, He is extravagant, and when we choose to live with open hands, we align ourselves with His nature. We become people who look more like our Father.
This is also a word of freedom. Generosity breaks the grip that money and things can have on our hearts. When you give, you are saying, "God is my source, not my savings account".
Practically, this might mean giving to your church, helping a neighbor in need, or quietly covering someone else's bill. Start somewhere. Start small if you need to, but start. Ask God to grow a generous spirit in you, and watch how He meets you in it.
Open hands are not empty hands. They are hands ready to receive what God pours in.
