Psalm 63:1
“O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water.”
Thirsting for What Truly Satisfies
We live in a world that tells us we should never feel empty. There is always another app, another distraction, another thing to buy, binge watch, or scroll through. And yet, many of us go to bed feeling hollow. That hollowness has a name, and David knew it well.
Psalm 63 was written when David was in the wilderness of Judah, likely fleeing for his life during Absalom's rebellion. He was cut off from the temple, from worship, from everything familiar. Now notice what he missed most: not his throne, not his army, not his comfort. He missed God. "My soul thirsts for You", he wrote, "my body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water".
The word "earnestly" in this psalm carries the idea of searching at first light, the way you search for something urgent before the day takes over. David was not casually curious about God, he was desperate for Him, the way a man stranded in the desert is desperate for water. That kind of longing is honest, and it is healthy. It tells us something important: the human soul was made for God, and when it goes without Him, it feels exactly like thirst.
Here is the good news. David did not write this psalm as a man who had given up, but as a man who knew where the water was. He had tasted God's love, and that memory kept him seeking.
If life feels dry right now, let that dryness point you toward God rather than away from Him.
Bring the hollow feeling to Him in prayer. Open your Bible. Sit quietly and ask Him to meet you.
He satisfies the thirsty soul, and He will not turn away anyone who seeks Him with a sincere heart.
God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.— John Piper
