Genesis 22:7-8
“Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.”
When God Provides the Lamb
A father and his son walk up a mountain together, carrying wood and fire, and the boy asks the question that must have broken Abraham's heart: "Where is the lamb?"
Abraham's answer was not a dodge. It was a declaration of faith: "God Himself will provide the lamb." The text says the two walked on together quietly afterwards. No argument, no panic. Just trust, one step at a time.
You probably know what happened next. Abraham bound his son, raised the knife, and at the last moment God stopped him. A ram caught in a nearby thicket became the offering instead. Isaac was spared, and Abraham named that place Yahweh-Jireh, which means "The Lord will provide". It became a saying in Israel for generations: "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided".
What makes this story so much bigger than one father and one son on one mountain, is the fact that God provided a ram that day so that Isaac would live, but centuries later, possibly on the same hill, God did not stop the knife. He let His own Son, Jesus, be the offering. Jesus is the Lamb that Abraham's words were always pointing toward. "God Himself will provide the lamb" was a promise that stretched far beyond that afternoon.
John the Baptist saw it clearly when he spotted Jesus walking toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). What Abraham said in faith, God fulfilled completely at the cross.
Yahweh-Jireh is still His name. The God who provided a ram for Abraham is the same God who gave His Son for you.
Whatever you are carrying today, whatever feels unsolvable or too heavy, you can walk forward trusting the One who already gave everything.
He provided the Lamb. He will provide for you.
It is not the magnitude of our actions but the amount of love that is put into them that matters.— Billy Graham
