Verse of the Day

1 Peter 2:24-25

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. “By His stripes you are healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

Carried Back to the Shepherd

There is something deeply honest about being compared to a wandering sheep. Sheep don't usually run away in defiance, they just drift, one patch of grass at a time, until they look up and have no idea where they are. That picture fits most of us better than we'd like to admit.

Peter wrote these words to scattered believers who had known real suffering. He was pointing them back to what Christ had already done, so they could keep standing firm. His source is Isaiah 53, written centuries before Jesus was born, and yet it reads like a description written at the foot of the cross. Peter saw that connection clearly: the suffering servant Isaiah described was Jesus.

The heart of these two verses is substitution. Jesus didn't just suffer alongside us, He bore our sins in His own body. He took what we owed, carried it to the cross, and paid it in full. The word Peter uses for "tree" is the same word used for the cursed wood in the Old Testament. Jesus was not simply executed, He stepped into the curse so we wouldn't have to.

The healing Peter mentions is not mainly about physical sickness, it is the healing of a broken relationship with God. Sin separates, the cross restores. Because of what Jesus did, we can be brought back, not as strangers, but as people who belong to a Shepherd who actually knows us.

That last phrase is worth sitting with today: "the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls". Jesus is not a distant caretaker, He watches over the deepest part of who you are.

If you feel like you've been drifting, the good news is simple: the Shepherd is already looking for you. You don't have to find your way back on your own.
