Psalm 91:1-2
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Shelter That Never Fails
Most of us have a place we go when life feels too heavy. Maybe it's a quiet room, a trusted friend's kitchen table, or a walk outside where no one can find us. We were made to seek shelter. That instinct points to something deeper.
Psalm 91 opens with a picture of someone who has found the ultimate hiding place. The word "dwells" here is important. It's not a quick visit or a desperate sprint through the door when things fall apart, it describes a person who has chosen to live there, to set up home in the presence of God. And the result is that they "abide", they stay, they rest, in the shadow of the Almighty. A shadow means you are close enough to block the light. That's how near God is to the one who makes Him their home.
The psalm is thought to have been written during a time of real danger, possibly when soldiers faced battle or when plague moved through a city. The writer wasn't speaking poetically from a safe place, he was making a bold, personal declaration: "You are my refuge and my fortress". Those two words meant something concrete. A refuge was a place you ran to, while a fortress was a place that held when everything outside was crashing down.
For us today, that means trusting God is not just an idea for Sunday morning. It's a daily choice to turn toward Him first, before the phone, before the news, before the worry takes hold. When you wake up tomorrow, before the day gets loud, try speaking these words out loud: "God, You are my refuge. I trust You today".
That small act of faith is exactly what this psalm is inviting you into.
We need never shout across the spaces to an absent God. He is nearer than our own soul, closer than our most secret thoughts.— A.W. Tozer
