Verse of the Day

Colossians 3:15-16

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

When Peace Holds the Gavel

Most of us let worry run the meeting. Fear gets the first word, anxiety sets the agenda, but Paul writes something that flips that completely: let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

The word "rule" here comes from the Greek word for an umpire or a referee. In ancient athletic games, the umpire made the final call. Nothing moved forward without his decision. Paul is saying that in the court of your inner life, peace should be the one holding the gavel, not anxiety, not bitterness, not the noise of the world around you.

Colossians was written to a church being pulled in several directions by false teaching and social pressure. Paul wasn't giving them a relaxation tip, he was calling them to a settled conviction about who Christ is and what He has already done. That peace isn't something you manufacture on a good day, it's a gift given to people who have been joined together in one body under one Lord.

Notice how quickly Paul moves from peace to community. "For to this you were called as members of one body". The peace of Christ isn't just personal, it shapes how we treat each other, loosens the grip of grudges, makes room for honest, loving correction. It fills our mouths with songs instead of complaints.

"Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you", not occasionally, not when convenient. Richly. Like a home where someone actually lives, not a house with all the lights off.

Here is a simple question for today: what is ruling in your heart right now? Whatever has that gavel, it will shape your words, your relationships, and your worship.
Ask Christ to take the seat that belongs to Him.
