John 11:25-26
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
When Death Does Not Win
Martha was standing at a grave. Her brother Lazarus had been dead four days, and she wasn't looking for a theology lesson, she was in pain.
Into that grief, Jesus said something that changed everything: "I am the resurrection and the life".
Notice He didn't say, "I will bring the resurrection someday", He said, "I am the resurrection". Present tense. Standing in front of a grieving woman at a tomb outside Bethany.
This moment in John 11 comes at the midpoint of Jesus' ministry, just before His own death and resurrection. Jesus was not speaking in theory, He was about to walk the same road Lazarus had walked, and then walk back out on the other side of it. His words to Martha were a preview of what He was about to prove.
The claim He makes is bold. Believers will die physically, yes, but physical death is not the final word. The life Jesus gives goes deeper than a heartbeat, it is a connection to God Himself that no grave can interrupt.
He asked Martha a direct question: "Do you believe this?"
He asks us the same thing today.
This is not a question about church attendance or moral effort, it is a question about trust. Do you believe that Jesus has authority over death itself? Do you believe that your life, your real life, is held in His hands?
If you are walking through grief right now, or sitting with the fear of your own death, or watching someone you love suffer, Jesus is not absent from that moment. He is standing right where Martha stood, asking the same question.
You don't have to have all the answers, Martha didn't either. But you can answer the one question He asks: "Do you believe this?"
That answer is enough to change everything.
Death is not the end. It is not a wall but a door.— John Bunyan
