Deuteronomy 7:9
“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.”
A Faithfulness That Never Runs Out
We live in a world where promises get broken all the time. Contracts expire, relationships fall apart, and even the most well-meaning people let us down. So when Moses stands before Israel and declares that God is the "faithful God who keeps His covenant", those words hit differently than we might expect.
Moses was speaking to a generation of Israelites who were about to enter the Promised Land. Their parents had wandered in the wilderness for forty years, and many of them had seen what it looks like when people are unfaithful to God. Moses wanted them to anchor their hearts in something that would never shift: the character of God Himself.
The word translated "loving devotion" here comes from the Hebrew word hesed, which carries the idea of loyal, covenant love. It's not just warm feelings, it's love that shows up, keeps its word, and stays. God's hesed isn't based on how well we perform, it runs all the way to "a thousand generations", which is the Bible's way of saying there is no end to it.
This verse isn't just history, it's a promise that reaches all the way to you today. The same God who led Israel through the wilderness, who parted the sea and gave manna in the desert, is the God who knows your name and your situation right now. His faithfulness doesn't wear out.
A practical way to carry this truth with you: when you feel like God has gone quiet, look back. Think of one moment when He came through for you. That moment is evidence of His hesed, His covenant love in action.
Rest in this today. God is not scrambling to keep His promises.
He is the faithful God, and that will never change.
God is not greater if you reverence Him, but you are greater if you serve Him.— Augustine of Hippo
