Verse of the Day

Ephesians 2:8-10

“For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.”

Saved and Shaped by Grace

Most of us spend a lot of energy trying to earn things. We earn our paycheck, our reputation, our place at the table. So when we come to God, it feels natural to assume we need to earn that too.

Paul stops that thinking cold.

Writing to believers in Ephesus, a city full of people trying to appease gods through rituals and offerings, Paul makes something crystal clear: salvation is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift. You didn't work for it, you cannot brag about it. God gave it freely, received through faith, and that faith itself is something He made possible.

The Greek word translated "workmanship" in verse 10 is poiema, the word from which we get "poem". You are God's poem, His crafted work, His masterpiece in progress. That is not flattery, it is a statement about who did the creating. The point is not how impressive the poem is, but how skilled the Poet is.

Here is where it gets practical. Verse 10 tells us that God prepared good works for us "in advance". Before you woke up this morning, God had already arranged opportunities for you to reflect His love, to serve someone, to speak a kind word, to be generous. You do not do these things to get saved. You do them because you are saved, and because the Craftsman is still working on you.

So today, look for those moments. The coworker who seems discouraged, the neighbor who needs help, the friend who needs to hear that God loves them. These are not accidents, they are appointments, set up by the One who saved you and is still shaping you.

Rest in the grace that rescued you. Then walk in the purpose that grace produced.
