Psalm 126:5-6
“Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain.”
Tears That Become a Harvest
Grief and productivity don't usually go together. When we are broken, we tend to stop. We pull back. We wait for the pain to pass before we try again. Psalm 126 describes something that cuts against that instinct: a farmer going out into the field in tears, still planting.
This psalm was written for Israel returning from exile in Babylon. After decades of captivity, God brought His people home. It felt like a dream, verse 1 tells us. But the land was still scarred, and the work of rebuilding was real and hard. The tears in these verses aren't just private sorrow, they are the tears of people who have been through something and are still carrying weight, even as they go back to work.
The picture of sowing in tears is not a call to suffer silently. It is a promise that faithful effort in painful seasons is never wasted. The farmer does not wait until he feels better to plant. He goes out weeping, seed in hand, trusting that the ground will do what ground does, and God promises: he will come back singing, arms full.
This is the shape of so much faithful living. You pray for a friend who doesn't seem to be changing, and you keep praying. You serve in a ministry that feels fruitless, and you keep showing up. You share the gospel with someone who walks away, and you don't quit. You sow in tears.
God does not waste those seeds. The harvest belongs to Him, and His timing is perfect.
If you are in a hard season right now, still going, still planting even though your heart is heavy, take courage. The reaping is coming. Go out today, seed in hand, and trust the God who turns mourning into joy.
God is too good to be unkind and too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.— Charles Spurgeon
