Romans 12:11-13
“Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer. Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Keeping the Fire Burning
Nobody sets out to grow cold in their faith. It happens slowly, quietly, the way a fire dims when you stop adding wood. One day you realize the warmth is gone, and you can't quite say when it left.
Paul writes these words in Romans 12 as part of a longer description of what a transformed life looks like in practice. He has just urged the church in Rome to offer themselves as living sacrifices, renewed in mind. Now he gets specific. He lists the small, daily habits that keep that renewal alive: staying fervent, staying joyful, staying patient, staying in prayer, and staying generous.
Notice that Paul doesn't say "feel excited about God." He says keep serving, keep praying, keep sharing. The fire is maintained through action, not just emotion. Fervor is a choice before it is a feeling.
The phrase "persistent in prayer" stands at the center of his list, and it's not an accident. Prayer is the connection point between our effort and God's power. When hope gets hard and affliction presses in, prayer is how we stay tethered. It is where joyfulness gets refueled when our natural energy runs dry.
Paul then closes with something wonderfully practical: share with believers who are in need, and open your home. The spiritual life is never just between you and God, it flows outward. Generosity and hospitality are not extras added on top of faith. They are part of what faith looks like when it's working.
Today, take stock of your fire. Is it burning? If it has dimmed, you don't need a dramatic experience to rekindle it. You need the next small act of faithfulness: pray, give, open a door, serve someone.
The flame comes back when you tend it.
We are not called to be successful, we are called to be faithful.— Oswald Chambers
