Verse of the Day

1 Peter 4:8-10

“Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without complaining. As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.”

Love That Covers and Serves

Loving others deeply sounds beautiful until you actually have to do it. Peter wrote these words to scattered, persecuted Christians living in a hostile world. They were under pressure from the outside, which means tensions on the inside were real too. Tired people snap, stressed people complain. Hurting people sometimes hurt each other, Peter knew this, and that is exactly why he wrote what he did.

"Above all, love one another deeply". The word Peter uses for "deeply" carries the idea of a muscle stretched to its limit. This is not a casual, comfortable kind of love, it is love that keeps going even when it costs something.

Here is the surprising part: Peter says this love "covers over a multitude of sins". He is not talking about ignoring serious wrong or pretending problems do not exist, he is drawing from Proverbs 10:12, which says love does not fan the flame of every offense. Deep love chooses not to keep a running list of every slight, every failure, every disappointment. It gives grace the way it has received grace.

Then Peter gets practical. He tells these believers to show hospitality without complaining, and to use their gifts to serve one another. Real love shows up in the small, unglamorous things: a meal shared, a door opened, a talent offered freely. Warren Wiersbe once wrote, "The Christian life is not a playground, it is a battleground, but we have everything we need to be victorious". That "everything we need" includes the gifts God has placed in each of us, meant not for our own comfort but for each other.

Today, ask yourself: Is there someone you have been keeping a mental score on? Is there a gift you have been holding back? Love deeply. Serve freely. That is the call.
