Verse of the Day

Colossians 3:12-13

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Dressed in Something Better

Getting dressed is something you do without much thought. Shirt, pants, shoes, and you're out the door. But Paul, writing from prison to the church at Colossae, asks us to think carefully about what we put on every single day.

The believers in Colossae were a mixed group, Jews and Gentiles, people who came from different backgrounds and carried old habits into new faith. Conflict was real and Paul knew he wasn't writing to a perfect church. He was writing to people who needed the same reminder we do: you are chosen, set apart, and deeply loved by God, so live like it.

That identity, "elect of God, holy and beloved", is the foundation of everything. Paul doesn't say "try harder to be kind", he says "because of who you already are, clothe yourselves". Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. These are not personality traits some people are born with. They are things we put on, day after day, by choice.

Forgiveness is the hardest piece, and Paul doesn't soften it: forgive the way Christ forgave you. That's a high standard. Jesus forgave completely, without condition, while we were still the ones who needed forgiving. That kind of forgiveness doesn't come naturally. It comes from sitting quietly with how much you yourself have been forgiven.

Warren Wiersbe once wrote, "We are not saved by forgiving others, but we forgive others because we have been saved". That's the order that matters. Forgiveness flows out of grace already received, not the other way around.

So today, before you walk into whatever comes, ask God to help you get dressed. Not just in clothes, but in the character of Christ. The world will notice the difference, and so will the people closest to you.
