Changed From the Inside Out

People spend a lot of energy trying to change their circumstances, hoping that a new job, a new city, or a fresh start somewhere else will finally make them feel different. Paul writes something that cuts right through that thinking: the real change God offers doesn’t start with your surroundings, it starts inside you.

Paul wrote these words to the church in Corinth, a city full of people with messy pasts. Some had come out of idol worship, sexual sin, and lives that looked nothing like the kingdom of God. Paul doesn’t speak to them as people trying to do better, he speaks to them as people who already are something new. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation”. That little phrase “in Christ” is everything, it means joined to Him, belonging to Him, living under His life rather than your own.

The core truth here is that salvation isn’t a patch job. God doesn’t take the old version of you and clean it up a little, He makes something genuinely new. The old life, with its guilt and its broken patterns and its separation from God, has passed away. That’s not wishful thinking, that’s what happened the moment you trusted Christ.

Here’s where it gets practical: the new creation isn’t a feeling you chase, it’s a reality you walk in. Some days you won’t feel new at all. Old habits will knock on the door, old fears will try to move back in. This is exactly where Elisabeth Elliot’s insight cuts deep: the change you’re looking for isn’t found in better circumstances. It’s found in Christ living in you right where you are.

Ask God today to help you live out of who you already are in Him, not who you used to be.
