Malachi 3:6-7
“Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed. Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?”
The God Who Does Not Drift
Most things in life shift over time. Friendships cool, promises get forgotten, even our own feelings about God can go up and down like a tide. Malachi 3:6 plants a flag in the ground: the Lord does not change.
Malachi was writing to a people who had grown cold. They were going through the religious motions, but their hearts had drifted far from God. They had stopped keeping His commands, not all at once, but slowly, generation by generation. And now they stood at a distance, confused about how to find their way back.
God’s answer is both honest and tender. He names their wandering clearly, but then He opens a door: "Return to Me, and I will return to you". That is a stunning promise, it's not "earn your way back" or "prove you are serious first", just return.
The path home is short because God has not moved.
God’s unchanging character is not just a theological fact to file away, it is the very ground on which repentance becomes possible. If God were fickle, who would dare come back? If His mercy had an expiration date, why try? But He is the same yesterday and today, His invitation stands.
A.W. Tozer once said that what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. That is worth sitting with. If you picture a God who is irritated, distant, or done with you, you will never walk back through that open door. But when you see Him as He truly is, constant, patient, and calling you home, repentance starts to feel less like punishment and more like relief.
Today, wherever you have drifted, God is still there. Turn toward Him. He is already turned toward you.
What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.— A.W. Tozer
