Joel 2:26-27
“You will have plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you. My people will never again be put to shame. Then you will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame.”
When God Restores What Was Lost
Shame has a long memory. It reminds you of what you had and lost, what you built and watched fall apart, what you were promised and never received. For the people of Israel in Joel’s time, that shame was very real. Locusts had stripped the land bare, fields that once fed families were empty.
The people wondered if God had forgotten them, but God’s Word through Joel is stunning in its tenderness. He does not just promise food, He promises satisfaction, fullness, and something even more precious: the end of shame. Twice in these two verses, God says, "My people will never again be put to shame". That repetition is not an accident, God wants it to land. He wants it to settle deep.
The core truth here is not just that God provides, but that God is present. "You will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other". Restoration is not just about getting things back, it is about knowing God again, up close, without the distance that loss and guilt can create. When God restores, He restores the relationship, not just the circumstances.
Martin Luther understood this from hard experience. Whatever he placed in God’s hands, he still possessed. Whatever he tried to hold onto himself, he eventually lost. That is a truth worth sitting with today.
What are you holding tightly right now, afraid that if you let go, it will be gone forever? Joel’s promise whispers something different: the things placed in God’s care are the things that last. Bring your losses to Him. Bring your shame. He is not a God who stands far off. He is present, and He still restores.
I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess.— Martin Luther
