Verse of the Day

John 1:1-3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.”

Before the Beginning, There Was God

Science tells us the universe had a starting point. The Big Bang theory, widely accepted today, points to a moment when all matter, energy, space, and time burst into existence from nothing. For many, this raises a question: what was there before that? John’s Gospel opens with a stunning answer.

John begins with three simple words: "In the beginning". He is pointing us right back to Genesis 1, where God spoke light and life into an empty void, but John goes further. Before creation began, the Word already was. Jesus, the eternal Son of God, was not created. He was not a later addition to the story, He was there before the story started, and He is the reason the story started at all. "Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made".

This is not just history, it's Christian reasoning wrapped in poetry. Every honest scientist who traces the universe back to its earliest moment eventually arrives at a boundary: a point before which our tools and equations cannot reach. Christians believe that beyond that boundary is not empty silence. It is a Person. A God who existed before time, who spoke creation into being with intention and love. A Being that is outside of space and time, is personal because He decided to create everything, and sovereign for the exact same reason.

Here is where this gets even more personal. If God made everything from nothing, He did not make you by accident. You are not a random arrangement of atoms that happened to develop a heartbeat by pure chance. You were designed by the same Word who set the stars in place. Augustine, one of the early Church fathers, understood this deeply. His own restless search through philosophy and pleasure finally led him to see that the human heart carries a longing that only its Creator can fill.

If you feel that restlessness today, do not run from it. Let it lead you to the One who was there before everything else, and who made you for Himself.

You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.
