John 1:9-11
“The true Light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”
The Light That People Still Reject
It is strange to think that the One who made the world walked into it, and the world looked the other way.
John opens his Gospel with some of the most striking words ever written about Jesus. He calls Him the true Light, the One who gives light to everyone. This is not a small claim, John is saying that every sense of truth, conscience, and longing people carry in their hearts traces back to Jesus. He came into the very world He created, and yet the world did not recognize Him. His own people, the ones who had waited centuries for a Messiah, did not receive Him.
John does not stop at rejection, he pushes forward to something better. To all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. Not born by human effort or family heritage. Born of God. That is the core of these verses: Jesus came not just to be seen, but to transform those who open their hearts to Him.
Now think about what that means for you today. If you have received Jesus, you carry the same light John describes into every room you enter. Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 5: you are the light of the world. The world still has a habit of looking away from the light. People reject it, ignore it, or explain it away, but that should not stop you from shining.
Sharing the gospel can feel costly because it risks awkward conversations, misunderstanding, even real loss, but it's worth it. Jim Elliot, who gave his life as a missionary, understood the math differently. He recognized that what we hold back out of fear is nothing compared to what we gain in Christ, and nothing compared to what others might gain if we speak.
Let the light in you be generous today. Someone nearby may be waiting for it.
He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.— Jim Elliot
