John 1:14
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
God in Flesh, Walking Among Us
Nobody expected God to show up the way He did.
The Jewish people had waited centuries for a Messiah. They expected a king with armies, a throne, and power that the whole world could see. Instead, God came as a baby, born in a barn, raised by a carpenter. John opens his Gospel by grounding Jesus in eternity, calling Him “the Word” who existed before time began and through whom everything was made. Then, in one stunning sentence, John tells us that Word became flesh.
That is the heart of Christianity. God did not stay distant. He did not send a message or a symbol. He came Himself. He walked on dusty roads, sat at dinner tables with sinners, touched the sick, wept at a grave, and looked people in the eye. John and the other disciples saw it firsthand. They saw His glory, not the far-off glory of a distant deity, but the close, personal glory of a Father who loves.
And why did He come? Not just to teach, though He taught with perfect wisdom. Not just to show us how to live, though He lived a life we never could on our own. He came to give Himself. The same grace and truth that John saw in Jesus pointed straight toward the cross. Jesus became flesh so He could die in our place, the one perfect sacrifice that could actually take away sin. What the law could only point to, Jesus fulfilled completely.
C.S. Lewis once said that he believed in Christianity not only because he could see it, but because by it he could see everything else. That is what the Incarnation does. When you understand that God loved you enough to become one of us, everything else in life starts to make sense.
Today, let that truth settle into you. The God of the universe walked among us. He still walks with those who trust Him.
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.— C.S. Lewis
