John 1:27-29
“He is the One who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” All this happened at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Becoming Who Jesus Is Making You
John the Baptist was at the top of his game. Crowds were coming out to the Jordan River, people were being baptized. His name was known across the region and yet, when Jesus walked up, John pointed away from himself and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world".
That moment, recorded in John 1:27-29, captures something really important. John had spent his whole ministry preparing people for someone greater. He openly said he was not even worthy to untie Jesus' sandals, the job of the lowest servant in a household. He was not being falsely modest, he just understood exactly who Jesus was.
The following day, John saw Jesus again and repeated that same declaration: "Look, the Lamb of God". The phrase connected directly to the sacrificial system Israel had known for centuries. A lamb without blemish, offered to cover sin. Jesus was not just a teacher or a prophet, He was the fulfillment of every sacrifice ever made, the One who would take away sin once and for all.
Two of John’s disciples heard this and began to follow Jesus. They asked where He was staying, and Jesus gave the simplest invitation: "Come and see". One of them, Andrew, went and found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus too. Just like that, a chain of transformation began.
This is still how it works. Jesus meets us where we are. He does not require us to clean ourselves up first, but He also does not leave us unchanged. As Max Lucado has put it, God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.
Who in your life needs to hear "Come and see"? The invitation Jesus gave is still open, and you can pass it along today.
God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.— Max Lucado
