John 2:3-4
“When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
Where Jesus Stands, Joy Begins
Nobody wants to be the host when the celebration runs dry. In first-century Jewish culture, running out of wine at a wedding was not just embarrassing, it was a social failure that could follow a family for years. Into that moment of quiet panic, Mary turns to Jesus.
What unfolds in John 2:3-11 is the first of Jesus' signs, and it tells us something important about who He is. Mary brings the problem to Him simply and directly: “They have no more wine.” Jesus' response sounds like a gentle distance at first, but Mary knows Him well enough to tell the servants, "Do whatever He tells you". She trusts Him completely, even before she sees what He will do.
Jesus instructs the servants to fill six stone water jars to the brim. These were purification jars, used for religious washing that could hold twenty to thirty gallons each. When the master of the banquet tastes what comes out, he pulls the groom aside and says something remarkable: everyone else serves the good wine first and brings out the cheap stuff later, but you have saved the best for last.
That line is not just a compliment about the drink, it is a picture of how Jesus works. The world offers its best upfront and then leaves you empty. Jesus starts where we are broken and brings something better than we expected. The wedding guests did not just have enough wine, they had the best wine, in abundance, because Jesus showed up.
Charles Spurgeon once said something that fits this moment well. Even a small trust in Jesus changes everything. But the more we lean into Him, the more of heaven we experience right here, right now.
Where are you running dry today? Bring it to Jesus. He still fills what is empty, and what comes from His hand is always worth the wait.
A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul.— Charles Spurgeon
