John 1:1-5
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
The Word Who Was Already There
Before there was a sunrise, a mountain, or a single human worry, Jesus was already there. John starts his Gospel with that striking claim. He does not begin with a manger, he begins before time, with the Word who was with God and was God.
John is writing to people who needed to know who Jesus really is. A Galilean carpenter had walked their roads, and John wants them to see that this was the Creator Himself incarnate. “Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made”. The hands that healed the blind are the same hands that shaped the stars.
John gets even more personal: “In Him was life, and that life was the light of men”. Notice that life comes first. We do not make our own light, it comes from Him, and it is given to people who could never produce it.
Maybe you woke up this morning feeling like the dark is winning. A hard diagnosis, a quiet house, a prayer that seems to hit the ceiling. John does not pretend the darkness is not real, he says it is there, but he also says the darkness “has not overcome it”. Not once, not ever. The light does not need you to hold it up. Jesus is the Light, and your job is not to shine on your own but to turn toward Him.
That is good news if you feel empty today. You do not have to fill yourself first. Jesus came into the world to give life to everyone who repents and believes in Him, and He does not turn away anyone who comes.
Here is one small step. Before you check your messages or start your list, take thirty seconds and name the darkest thing on your mind. Hand it to Jesus out loud. Let Him be the Light over it.
Lord Jesus, You were with the Father from the beginning, and You are with me this morning. Shine into the dark places in my life, and fill what is empty in me with Yourself. Amen.
Outside of Christ, I am only a sinner, but in Christ, I am saved. Outside of Christ, I am empty; in Christ, I am full.— Watchman Nee
