John 1:12-14
“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Born Into a Family You Cannot Earn
Nobody gets to pick the family they are born into. You did not apply for your last name, and you did not earn your place at the table. John says something like that is true of God’s family too, except this birth comes from above.
Just before these verses, John has said that Jesus came to His own people and many did not receive Him. Then comes the turn: “But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God”. Notice the word “gave”, sonship is not a prize for the best behaved, it is handed to everyone who receives Jesus and trusts Him. John even says these children are born “not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God”. Your family line, your effort, and your résumé cannot do this. God does it.
And how can He do it? Verse 14 tells us: “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us”. The One who was with God in the beginning, the One we met in verse 1, put on skin and moved into the neighborhood. John says, “We have seen His glory”, and it was “full of grace and truth”. He did not come to point at our failures from a distance, He came close, and He came to bring us in.
Maybe you have carried a quiet feeling that you are on the outside. Perhaps a home that was never safe, a church season that left you hurt, or regret that tells you God is tired of you. Receiving Christ speaks a different word over you. If you have turned from sin and trusted Him, you are not a guest on probation. You are a child, born of God.
Here is one step for today: when that old voice says you do not belong, answer it out loud: “I am a child of God because Jesus gave me that right”.
Father, thank You for making me Your child through Jesus, not through anything I did. Help me live today as someone who belongs to You. Amen.
However many blessings we expect from God, His infinite liberality will always exceed all our wishes and our thoughts.— John Calvin
